Our Journey

suitable for viticulture
Encounter with the land of Komoro

Since 2016, we have been searching all over Japan for an environment suitable for winemaking.
And it was Komoro City, Nagano Prefecture that I met.First, in 2019, two people developed a 2-hectare abandoned farmland.
It was developed into a vineyard and seedlings for European wine were planted.
In 2021, the first harvest from the fields planted in the first year. The joy was even greater.
With the opening of Komorokko Farm & Winery in March 2023, winemaking at the same winery will start sequentially.

our wine making

Have you ever tried Japanese wine?

In 2018, the definition of Japanese wine established by the National Tax Agency was applied.Domestic wines are gradually gaining recognition overseas, but when we hear the word wine, we still think of other countries such as France and Italy.

I'm Japanese, so I make wine in Japan. There are wines that can only be made in Japan. We will take on the challenge to make Komoro a world-famous brewery.

A land called Komoro

Komoro City is a city full of poetry with a townscape rich in nature and history.
With few rainy days throughout the year, plenty of sunlight, and large temperature differences, it is an area suitable for grape cultivation that boasts one of the best sunny days in Japan.

In this land of Komoro, we have cultivated abandoned farmlands scattered throughout the city at altitudes of 650-950m, and are cultivating about 18,000 grapes, mainly European varieties. We respect nature with the minimum amount of pesticides necessary, and aim for a taste that can only be expressed in Komoro City through rich soil.

Days spent plowing abandoned farmland
And a new landscape that continues to be born

As of 2023, we have 10 vineyards in Komoro City, but at first they were all abandoned farmlands. It was a land with a lot of bedrock, and it was very difficult to develop and maintain.
Of course, there were some lands that could be used as farm fields as soon as the weeds were cut, but when we comprehensively considered the altitude, drainage, soil, and shape of the land, we found the ideal place that everyone wants to work on. Most of the fields were desolate.

I didn't want to compromise because of the difficulty of developing and maintaining grapes.
However, the land I touched was not a desolate field, but a rough copse or forest. There were so many trees that were dozens of meters in diameter and dozens of centimeters in diameter that you could not even see a few meters ahead.

The first mechanical tool for unfamiliar work at first.I didn't even know how to change the abandoned farmland to a field, and everything was fumbling for the first time.In addition, there is no heavy machinery, and all work is done manually with only shovels, mowers, and chainsaws.

I devoted myself to the development of the land, to the point where I wondered if my goal was not to make wine or grow grapes, but to turn abandoned farmland into beautiful fields.

Every day from early morning until dusk, they work tirelessly, cutting trees and digging and transporting stones, rain or snow.It was really painful. At first, the work was done manually by only two people, but gradually the number of heavy machinery was enhanced, and the number of good friends who devoted their passion to winemaking increased. After overcoming these difficulties, the area has now grown to 2 hectares, and about 6.5 saplings have been planted.

The sense of accomplishment I felt at the moment when the abandoned farmland was turned into a field was a feeling I had never felt before.I can't help but look forward to planting more seedlings, harvesting more grapes, and transforming into wine.

We have a strong desire to bring out the full potential of this rich Komoro soil and create unique, rich and great wines. We would like to convey our passion for winemaking to everyone.

We hope that our agriculture will connect people and create interactions.
